This is a good biography for 1910, though of course, it does not have the benefit of later scholarship. It tells the anecdotes which are in all modern biographies, but with more detail about Pugachev, Dr. Dimsdale, the Quaker MP who inoculated her family, and Gustav IV of Sweden. The emphasis is on homey, quotidian anecdotes and a great deal of world history is skipped over. There are some oddities--the author consistently refers to Ivan VI as Ivan III. The last partition of Poland was in 1795, not 1791. As a book for children, the author is not afraid to tackle the subject of illegitimate children, but cannot bring himself to say the word "pregnant." All those ladies were in "an interesting condition." Not quite Victorian. It is amusing to read his remarks on contemporary Russia.Product details
